About

Summit Campground is a basic but conveniently located campground within the Little Missouri National Grasslands, managed by the USFS Dakota Prairie Grasslands. Situated approximately 19 miles south of Watford City off Highway 85, this small campground provides 3 campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, along with an accessible vault toilet and ample trailhead parking. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding badlands terrain, with easy access to the 2-mile Summit Trail and quarter-mile Overlook Trail. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations or fees required. Pack-in, pack-out rules apply, and visitors must come prepared with their own water as none is available on-site. Open year-round, the campground offers limited services after Labor Day and before Memorial Day. There are no electrical hookups, and pets are allowed but must remain leashed at all times. A 14-consecutive-day stay limit applies. Fire restrictions may be in effect during certain periods, and visitors are responsible for monitoring current conditions.

Directions

Located approximately 19 miles south of Watford City on Highway 85. Turn west onto Summit Road and turn into one of two gravel road entrances. Small rectangular metal brown and white National Grasslands picnic area signs are posted at each entrance.
