About

Summit Campground is a quiet, no-fee primitive campground located on the Little Missouri National Grassland in McKenzie County, North Dakota. Situated approximately 19 miles south of Watford City on Highway 85, the campground offers three campsites on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and two covered picnic areas are available. An accessible vault toilet is provided, though no potable water is available on site. The campground serves as a trailhead for the 2-mile Summit Trail and the quarter-mile Overlook Trail, both designated for non-motorized use only. These trails provide scenic views of the grassland landscape. The area is open year-round, though services are limited outside the Memorial Day to Labor Day window. Campers should be aware that fire restrictions may be in effect during dry conditions and should check current alerts before building campfires. Highway construction near the campground is scheduled during summer 2026 and may slow travel access to the area.
