About

Juniper Campground Group Site serves as the North Unit's only group camping option in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, located along the Little Missouri River approximately five miles from the Highway 85 entrance. The site can accommodate groups of 7 to 60 people with a maximum of 20 passenger vehicles. Set within the North Dakota badlands where Theodore Roosevelt once ranched and hunted in the 1880s, the campground provides direct access to two significant trails: the challenging 17.7-mile Achenbach Trail that traverses river bottomland, badlands hills, and includes a river crossing, and the 1.1-mile Little Mo nature trail that winds through river woodlands. The group site is moderately forested with cottonwood trees that turn golden in fall, though most areas receive partial to full sun. The Little Missouri River offers respite during hot summer days. Facilities include vault toilets, picnic tables, and seasonal drinking water from May through October. A dump station operates during the camping season, but there are no hookups for water, sewer, or electricity. The site accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs, though all vehicles must remain on designated roadways and pads. Watford City, located 15 miles north, provides shopping, restaurants, and amenities. The adjacent Little Missouri National Grassland, the nation's largest at over one million acres, offers additional recreation opportunities. Campers should be prepared for variable weather: summer temperatures range from 80 to 100 degrees with occasional thunderstorms and persistent wind, while winters bring temperatures well below zero.

Directions

From I-94, take Exit 42 in Belfield, ND onto U.S. Highway 85 north. Drive approximately 50 miles to the North Unit entrance, located 14 miles south of Watford City. Enter the park and travel 5.5 miles on the scenic drive. Juniper Campground is on the left.
