About

Strayhorse Campground is a free primitive campground in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, located 26 miles south of Alpine on US 191. At 7,780 feet elevation, the campground is nestled among large ponderosa pine and Gambel oak trees just six miles below the Mogollon Rim, providing cool shade during warm months. The campground features eight picnic tables, seven grills, vault toilets, and horse corrals for equestrian campers. Potable water is available seasonally but may be shut off during parts of the year. Trash service is not provided, so campers should plan to pack out all waste. The site sees light use, making it ideal for those seeking solitude in the high country. Nearby recreation includes Strayhorse Canyon Trail #20, which offers opportunities for day hiking and horseback riding through the surrounding forest.
