About

Strayhorse Campground is a small, rustic camping area located in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, 26 miles south of Alpine on US 191. At an elevation of 7,780 feet and nestled among towering ponderosa pine and Gambel oak, the campground provides a cool, shaded setting just six miles below the Mogollon Rim. This free campground is specifically designed to accommodate horse enthusiasts, featuring horse corrals and serving as the trailhead for two major trails: the Highline Trail #47, which follows the bottom of the Mogollon Rim, and the Raspberry Trail #35, which provides access into the Blue Range Primitive Area. The campground offers 7 sites with basic amenities including picnic tables and grills. Vault toilets are available, though water is shut off seasonally and potable water is not currently available on-site. There are no trash disposal services, so visitors must pack out all waste. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations. While officially open year-round, winter weather may make the campground inaccessible during colder months. The light usage level and remote location make it an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet, primitive camping experience combined with excellent trail access for horseback riding and hiking.
