About

At 9,000 feet elevation, KP Cienega ranks among the highest campgrounds in Arizona, delivering welcome relief from the desert heat. This small, primitive campground tucked into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests features just five single-unit sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with cooking grill. A vault toilet serves the campground, but there is no potable water available. The real draw here is access to backcountry. The KP Trailhead sits directly adjacent to the campground, launching hikers and backpackers onto the KP Trail (#70), which traces the South Fork of KP Creek for 9 miles as it descends into the Blue Range Primitive Area. Elk, mule deer, and wild turkey frequent the surrounding meadows and forests. The nearby Hannagan Meadow Resort offers a lodge and restaurant for those seeking amenities beyond the campground.

Directions

From Alpine, drive 27 miles south on US Highway 191 past Hannagan Meadow Resort to a sign pointing to KP Cienega. Turn east (left) onto the access road and drive 1.3 miles to the campground.
