Open for the 2026 season. All sites require reservations through Recreation.gov; walk-ups and cash payments are no longer accepted. Flush restrooms and potable water are operational. The Steel Creek Ranger Station is currently closed; contact Tyler Bend Visitor Center at 870-439-2502 for park information. The campground operates March 13 through November 15 with fees ($20/night), then remains open free of charge November 15 through March 15 with vault toilets only and no water.
About
Steel Creek Campground occupies one of the most scenic locations in Buffalo National River, nestled beneath the iconic Roark Bluff where the river curves through limestone cliffs. The campground is divided into two distinct areas: 26 walk-in tent sites shaded by hardwoods along the river, and 13 equestrian sites accommodating up to six people and four stock animals per site. The Buffalo River Trail passes directly through the campground, offering excellent day hiking or multi-day backpacking opportunities. The upper Buffalo River provides seasonal floating opportunities dependent on rainfall, typically navigable in spring and early summer. Some sections are technical and not recommended for novices. Lost Valley, an easy-to-moderate trail featuring caves and waterfalls, lies nearby in Boxley Valley. The campground has no electrical hookups or RV accommodations; trailers are permitted only in the horse camp area. During the operating season (approximately March 15 through November 15), flush restrooms and potable water are available throughout the campground. In winter, the campground remains open for free primitive camping with vault toilets only and no water. Quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., generators may run 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and stays are limited to 14 consecutive days.
Directions
From Highway 74, approximately 2 miles east of Ponca and 13 miles west of Jasper, turn onto Steel Creek Road. Drive 0.5 miles down a paved road to the valley floor where the road becomes gravel. The tent campground is to the left; the horse camp is to the right.
