About

Deer Tower Trailhead serves as a rustic access point for horse riders seeking a backcountry trail experience in the Ozark National Forest. Located in Newton County, Arkansas, this primitive trailhead provides access to 17 miles of horse trails divided into three smaller loop systems that wind through the rugged Ozark Mountains. The area offers an authentic wilderness experience with minimal development, allowing riders to explore forested terrain and mountain landscapes. As a basic trailhead, the site functions primarily as a staging area for equestrian adventures rather than a traditional campground with amenities. The trailhead is accessed via Arkansas Highway 16 and Forest Service Road 1206, approximately 16 miles south of Jasper. The remote location and lack of facilities make this destination suitable for self-sufficient outdoor enthusiasts prepared for primitive conditions. No fees are required to use the area, and the site operates on a first-come, first-served basis without reservations.

Directions

From Jasper, take Arkansas Highway 7 south for 15 miles, then turn right (west) on Arkansas Highway 16 and travel 1 mile. Turn right (northwest) on Forest Service Road 1206 (paved) and continue approximately 1 mile to the trailhead.
