Staunton River State Park Shelters

Open — The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Picnic shelters can be rented during these hours. Mini-shelters are available March 1 through November 30. Parking fees are not included in shelter rental.

About

Staunton River State Park provides four picnic shelter options for day use along Virginia's largest lake, Buggs Island Lake. The two main shelters accommodate up to 60 people comfortably and are located near the Dan River, offering shady settings for reunions and events. Both feature large grills, picnic tables, water spigots, and nearby restrooms. Shelter 2 provides waterfront views and a spacious deck. The two mini-shelters, Turkey Trail and Deer View, accommodate up to 15 people each and are open March 1 through November 30. All shelters can be rented from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The park is Virginia's first International Dark Sky Park and features 2,400 acres of woodlands along the Dan and Staunton rivers. Historic CCC-era structures from the 1930s provide a glimpse into the park's heritage.

Directions

From the north: Take U.S. 501 south to Halifax. At intersection of U.S. 501 and Route 360, turn left and go about 8 miles. At intersection of Route 360 and U.S. 360, go straight through the stoplight to Route 344. Travel 10 miles to the park entrance southeast of Scottsburg. From the south: Take U.S. 501 north to South Boston. At intersection of U.S. 501 and U.S. 58, turn right onto U.S. 58 east for approximately 1 mile, turn left at stoplight onto U.S. 360, travel east on U.S. 360 approximately 8 miles and turn right onto Route 344, go 10 miles to park entrance.
