Falkland Farms Hunts
Closed — This is a managed hunting area rather than a traditional campground. DCR offered managed deer hunts in November 2024. The property is still being developed for broader public access and recreation.
Special Weather Statement issued April 13 at 12:07AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. About
The Falkland Farms hunting area encompasses nearly 7,400 acres of preserved woodland in Halifax County, representing the largest private land conservation donation in Virginia history. The property was donated to the Commonwealth in 2021 and adjoins both Staunton River State Park and Difficult Creek Natural Area Preserve, creating the largest DCR-owned property to date. Historically known as one of the best hunting preserves in the region, the property features abundant mature forests, water resources, and diverse wildlife including deer, turkey, and waterfowl. Virginia State Parks now manages the property for conservation and limited public hunting access through managed hunt programs. The area is still under development for future public recreation activities, with long-term plans to integrate it more fully with Staunton River State Park amenities.
