Staunton River State Park Horse Campground

Located within the 2,400-acre Staunton River State Park in Halifax County, the equestrian campground provides dedicated facilities for horse camping enthusiasts. The campground includes 13 sites split between 10 paved pull-through sites that accommodate units up to 55 feet plus a vehicle, and 3 gravel back-in sites with tent pads for units up to 45 feet. Every site is equipped with electric pedestals offering 20, 30, and 50-amp service, water hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, and charcoal grills. The facility features 20 covered horse stalls available for rental, each provided with fresh bedding. Guests must carry proof of a negative Coggins test for each horse and clean stalls before checkout. A full bathhouse with showers serves the campground, along with a central dump station located at the entrance. The park offers 18 miles of multi-use trails open to horseback riders, hikers, and bikers, winding through woodlands and meadows along the Dan and Staunton rivers. Note that trails may close during wet conditions to prevent damage. The campground operates seasonally from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through Virginia State Parks. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and checkout is at 1 p.m. Open fires are prohibited March 1 through April 30 except between 4 p.m. and midnight.
