About

Buffalo Park Picnic Shelter sits on the shores of John H. Kerr Reservoir, where the Roanoke (Staunton) River meets the Dan River. The shelter provides a scenic spot for group gatherings with panoramic lake views. The day use area includes a swim beach, boat ramp, picnic tables, and a life jacket loaner station for visitors. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, was created with the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952 and extends 39 miles up the wooded, cove-studded shoreline across Virginia and North Carolina. The reservoir encompasses 50,000 acres of water and approximately 48,000 acres of hardwood and pine forest, with 800 miles of shoreline. The lake is widely known for fishing, with large-mouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish available. The Army Corps of Engineers manages 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake that provide year-round opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birding, and hunting for whitetail deer, wild turkey, and other game species. Nearby Buffalo Springs Park, located approximately 7 miles away, is on the Virginia State and National Historic Sites and was once a world-renowned source of bottled lithia waters. Gas and groceries are available in Clarksville, Virginia, about 15 minutes away.
