Staunton River State Park Horse Stalls
Open — Open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. A negative Coggins test is required for all horses.
Special Weather Statement issued April 13 at 12:07AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. About
Located along the Dan and Staunton rivers in Halifax County, the equestrian campground at Staunton River State Park offers specialized facilities for horse camping. The campground features 13 sites total: Sites 1-10 are pull-through with paved surfaces accommodating camping units up to 55 feet, while Sites 11-13 are back-in sites with gravel surfaces and tent pads for units up to 45 feet. Twenty covered horse stalls are available to rent alongside campsite reservations, with one horse permitted per stall. Guests are responsible for cleaning stalls before checkout. All sites include electric pedestals with 20, 30, and 50-amp outlets, water hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, and charcoal grills. A central dump station is available, though there are no sewer hookups. The bathhouse offers hot showers and is heated year-round. A water pressure regulator is recommended due to high water pressure. The park provides access to multi-use trails where horses are permitted. Horses may only be ridden on designated trails and must remain in stalls when not being ridden. As Virginia's first International Dark Sky Park, the facility maintains minimal lighting after 10 p.m. to preserve night sky viewing.
Directions
From South Boston, take U.S. 360 east approximately 8 miles to Route 344, then turn right and travel 10 miles to the park entrance southeast of Scottsburg. The equestrian campground is separate from the main campground within Staunton River State Park.
