Occoneechee State Park Campground

Open — The campground is open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday of December. The park is open for day-use visitation from 8 a.m. to dusk daily. The equestrian campground operates year-round.

Special Weather Statement issued April 13 at 5:52AM EDT by NWS Wakefield VA

5:52 AM — 6:00 PM

The combination of low relative humidity values in the 25 to 30 percent range, dry fuels, and SW winds gusting up to 20-25 mph will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires across much of central and eastern Virginia, including the Richmond Metro area, the Virginia Piedmont, and inland portions of the Virginia Northern Neck. Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. Virginia residents are reminded that open burning is prohibited before 4 PM EDT each day through April 30th.

About

Named after the indigenous Occoneechi people who inhabited the area until 1676, Occoneechee State Park sits along the shores of the 48,000-acre Buggs Island Lake, Virginia's largest lake. The park offers 46 campsites across two campgrounds. Iron Bow Campground (Campground B) accommodates RVs up to 35 feet and features all sites with electric and water hookups. Atlatl Campground (Campground C) has sites for equipment up to 30 feet, with both hookup and non-hookup options, plus select waterfront campsites for easy fishing and boating access. The park provides three boat ramps with 24-hour lake access, making it a premier destination for anglers pursuing Buggs Island Lake's record-setting catfish and renowned bass fishing. An equestrian campground with 11 pull-through sites and 11 covered horse stalls offers access to 22 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Additional amenities include a visitor center with Native American history exhibits, an archery range with both static and 3-D targets, and a 1,900-acre Wildlife Management Area. Boat rentals are available through a private concessionaire during the season.
