About
Staunton River State Park features eight climate-controlled cabins originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Located along the Staunton River in south-central Virginia, the park offers a rustic retreat on 2,400 acres along the Dan and Staunton rivers and Buggs Island Lake, Virginia's largest lake. The cabins range from one-room efficiencies to two-bedroom units sleeping 2-6 guests, all equipped with full kitchens including refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffeemaker, and cooking utensils. Each cabin features a wood-burning fireplace, heat pump, outdoor fire pit, picnic table, charcoal grill, and deck with patio furniture. Cabin 1 is ADA accessible. Guests must bring their own linens and towels. The park, one of Virginia's six original state parks opened in 1936, was designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2015, making it ideal for stargazing. Recreational opportunities include over 17 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, freshwater fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie and perch, boat launching, tennis and volleyball courts, disc golf, and three playgrounds. The visitor center, also built by the CCC, houses a gift shop and offers telescope rentals. While cabins are near the Staunton River with limited views through trees in off-season, they are not directly waterfront and there are no docking facilities in the cabin area.
