About
Staunton River Battlefield State Park preserves the site of a pivotal Civil War engagement where 700 Confederate defenders successfully repelled 5,000 Union cavalry in June 1864. The park's 300 acres feature Confederate earthworks, a 1.2-mile self-guided battlefield trail, and a 0.75-mile nature trail with wildlife observation towers overlooking wetlands. The park offers one large picnic shelter located near the Clover Visitor Center, which can accommodate up to 90 guests for family reunions, corporate outings, and group gatherings. The shelter includes grills and picnic tables with access to restrooms during visitor center hours. The shelter is available for daily rental from April 1 through November 1. This is a day-use only facility with no overnight accommodations. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, with the Clover Visitor Center open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The beautiful Staunton River flows by the park and offers excellent fishing opportunities for walleye and smallmouth bass.
