About

St. Johns Rock Campground opened in 2017 as part of Maryland's effort to expand off-road vehicle recreation opportunities on state forest lands. Located in Savage River State Forest near the town of Finzel in Garrett County, this specialized campground features eight sites designed specifically for ORV enthusiasts seeking direct trail access. The campground serves as a base camp for riders exploring the St. Johns Rock ORV Trail system, which features crushed gravel surfaces with light elevation changes and rock crawl obstacles. The sites vary in configuration, with some able to accommodate pop-up campers, trailers, or RVs, while others are designated for tent camping only. A large parking area provides space for vehicles and trailers. Situated in the mountainous western region of Maryland just south of Interstate 68, the campground offers a rustic experience in the dense forests characteristic of this area. The facility includes vault toilet facilities and is part of Maryland's growing network of public land recreation areas managed by the Department of Natural Resources.
