About

Howell Run Picnic Area is a day-use recreation site operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Jennings Randolph Lake in Mineral County, West Virginia. The facility overlooks the 952-acre lake nestled in the Allegheny Mountains and serves as a base for picnicking, sightseeing, and hiking. A nesting pair of bald eagles frequents the lake, making it a notable spot for wildlife observation. Three group shelters are available for reservation: Shelter #1 and #2 each accommodate up to 30 people, and a central gazebo is also available. Shelter #2 is ADA-accessible with running water. All shelters have 120-volt electric outlets. The facility includes flush toilets and playground equipment. The Lakeside Trail connects Howell Run to Shaw Beach, about a mile away, where swimming is available. This is a day-use only facility with no overnight camping. Shelters operate from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. For overnight camping at Jennings Randolph Lake, visitors should look to Robert W. Craig Campground nearby.
