Spring Gap Campground

Open — Open year-round with reservations required through Recreation.gov. Currently in non-peak season with rates at $10/night for single sites and $20/night for group sites. Potable water is seasonal. Equestrian traffic is temporarily prohibited between Spring Gap and Cumberland due to towpath resurfacing.

Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The coldest wind chills will be at elevations above 2000 feet between midnight tonight and 9 AM Tuesday.

Spring Gap Campground sits at Mile 173.3 along the C&O Canal Towpath near Cumberland, MD, tucked in the mountains of Western Maryland on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. The campground offers 12 single drive-in campsites and two group sites, with some sites accommodating small RVs or trailers up to 20 feet. Each single site includes a picnic table, fire pit, and grill, while group sites can accommodate up to 30 people each with room for two vehicles. The campground features a boat ramp providing direct access to the Potomac River for kayakers, canoeists, and anglers. Popular activities include hiking local trails, biking the C&O Canal Towpath, and paddling or fishing the Potomac River. The area's natural beauty is particularly striking during autumn when the western Maryland mountains display vibrant fall colors. Nearby Cumberland offers several attractions including a C&O Canal National Historical Park visitor center, the Allegany Museum, Gordon-Roberts House, Gilchrist Gallery, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The campground operates year-round with reservations required through Recreation.gov. Note that alcoholic beverages are prohibited at all C&O Canal campgrounds, and a Maryland fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.

From Cumberland, MD: Follow MD-51 S/E Industrial Road for approximately 7 miles. Campground will be directly off 51, on the right side of the road.
