About
McKinley Lake Cabin offers a remote lodging experience in southcentral Alaska's Chugach National Forest. Situated on the northwest shore of McKinley Lake, the 16x20 cabin is surrounded by dense spruce and hemlock forest with steep mountainous terrain. The cabin sleeps up to six guests on wooden bunks and is equipped with a wood stove for heat, table and benches, rainwater catchment barrel, and basic tools including a saw, axe, and splitting maul. An outdoor pit toilet is located nearby. The cabin has no running water, electricity, or cut firewood. Visitors must pack in all drinking water, food, sleeping bags and pads, cook stove, cooking gear, lanterns, toilet paper, first aid supplies, and garbage bags. Due to the remote location and potential weather delays, bringing 2-5 extra days of supplies is recommended. Access to the cabin is via the McKinley Lake Trail, a 2.25-mile hike from Mile 21 of the Copper River Highway. Float plane access from Cordova takes approximately 10 minutes, though frozen lake conditions may prevent landings in fall, winter, and early spring. Canoe or boat access via Alaganik Slough is best from mid-June to September. The surrounding area offers excellent fishing for cutthroat trout, sockeye and coho salmon, and Dolly Varden, as well as hunting opportunities for deer and bear.
Directions
Access by hiking begins at McKinley Lake Trail, a signed trailhead at Mile 21 of the Copper River Highway. The trail is 2.25 miles to the cabin. Float plane access is approximately 10 minutes from Cordova, landing on the lake beside the cabin. Canoe or boat access follows Alaganik Slough to McKinley Lake, approximately 2 miles. Float plane access may be unavailable in fall, winter, and early spring due to frozen lake. Boat access is best mid-June through September.
