About
McKinley Lake Cabin offers a remote backcountry lodging experience on the northwest end of McKinley Lake in the Chugach National Forest. The 16x20-foot cabin can accommodate up to 6 people and features wooden bunks, a table, benches, a wood stove for heat, basic tools (saw, axe, splitting maul), a rainwater catchment barrel, and an outdoor pit toilet. The cabin does not have running water, electricity, or cut firewood. Visitors must bring their own drinking water, firewood, food, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stove, cooking gear, lanterns, toilet paper, first aid kit, and garbage bags. Access to the cabin is by three methods: hiking 2.25 miles on the well-maintained McKinley Trail from Mile 21 of the Copper River Highway, float plane (approximately 10 minutes from Cordova, landing on the lake), or canoe up Alaganik Slough to McKinley Lake (approximately 2 miles). The cabin is surrounded by dense spruce and hemlock forest with steep mountainous terrain encircling the area. About a quarter-mile beyond the cabin are remnants of the Lucky Strike Mine with rusting machinery and a collapsed tunnel. The area provides excellent recreation opportunities. Anglers can find cutthroat trout near inlet creeks and gravel shoals, coho and sockeye salmon at the lake outlet, and Dolly Varden that follow spawning salmon. The nearby Pipeline Lakes Trail (junction at 1.25 miles from trailhead) leads to five small lakes with resident cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden. Hunters can pursue bear in spring and fall, and Sitka black-tailed deer from late summer through late fall. Wildlife viewing includes loons, waterfowl, spawning sockeye salmon, deer, moose, and both black and brown bears.
Directions
Hiking access begins at McKinley Lake Trail, a signed trailhead located at Mile 21 of the Copper River Highway. The cabin is 2.25 miles from the trailhead through dense forest. Canoe access is up Alaganik Slough to McKinley Lake, approximately 2 miles (best at high water mid-June to September; check stream conditions with Forest Service). Float plane access is typically 10 minutes from Cordova, landing on the lake (may be inaccessible in fall, winter, and early spring due to frozen lake surface).
