About
Power Creek Cabin is a remote backcountry rental cabin operated by the Chugach National Forest, located in the scenic Power Creek Valley approximately 4.2 miles from the Power Creek Trailhead. The trailhead sits at the end of Power Creek Road, roughly 7 miles north of the fishing community of Cordova, Alaska. The trail meanders through old-growth spruce-hemlock forest, passing waterfalls and offering views of Orca Inlet, Eyak Lake, and the coastal Chugach Mountain Range. The rustic 12x20-ft cabin features a loft, covered deck, and sleeps up to 8 guests on wooden bunkbeds without mattresses. Amenities include an oil stove for heat (burns #1 stove oil or kerosene, fuel not provided), a wood stove, table, splitting maul, saw, and rainwater catchment barrel. An outhouse is located outside. There is no potable water, electricity, or running water. Visitors must bring all supplies including water (or the means to treat stream water), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stoves, fuel, cooking gear, lanterns, toilet paper, first aid kit, and garbage bags for packing out trash. The surrounding area provides excellent hiking opportunities, including the 12.5-mile loop connecting Power Creek Trail and Crater Lake Trail. Wildlife in the area includes mountain goats, brown bears, black bears, and moose. During salmon runs in summer and fall, bears are particularly active near the creek. Fishing for small Dolly Varden is possible in the nearby stream.
Directions
From Cordova, Alaska, drive north approximately 6.9 miles on Power Creek Road to the Power Creek Trailhead at the end of the road. From the trailhead, hike 4.2 miles on Power Creek Trail to reach the cabin. The trail involves a stream crossing near the trailhead that can be knee-deep or greater depending on conditions.
