About
Tiedeman Slough Cabin offers an authentic remote Alaska experience in the heart of the Copper River Delta within Chugach National Forest. This 12x14 rustic cabin sleeps up to six people on wooden bunkbeds and is equipped with a table, kerosene stove, rainwater catchment barrel, and an outdoor pit toilet. The cabin has no running water or electricity, requiring visitors to bring their own water, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stoves, #1 stove oil, and all other camping essentials. The cabin sits on the east bank of Tiedeman Slough in a low-lying area surrounded by alder and willow, with ponds dotting the boggy landscape. The Copper River Delta is a major resting and feeding area for 20 million shorebirds and waterfowl traveling the Pacific Flyway, making bird watching exceptional. Waterfowl species include dusky Canada geese, mallard, pintail, green-winged teal, gadwall, widgeon, and shoveler. Land mammals in the area include brown bears, moose, wolves, beavers, and coyotes, with bears most visible in spring. Access is exclusively by floatplane (typically 10 minutes from Cordova) or boat at high tide. Boat access requires traveling to mile 17 on Copper River Highway, turning south on Alaganik Road to the boat ramp at mile 3, then traveling 7 miles west on Alaganik Slough and a quarter-mile north on Tiedeman Slough. Strong currents, shallow depths, high winds, and tide-dependent access make jet boats the preferred watercraft. Winter access can be difficult due to snow and ice. Fishing is poor near the cabin due to turbidity, but upstream in Alaganik Slough, silver salmon run August to September and sockeye salmon are abundant late June through July. Stay limit is seven consecutive days.
Directions
Accessible by floatplane (10 minutes from Cordova) or boat at high tide only. By boat: from Cordova, drive to mile 17 on Copper River Highway, turn south on Alaganik Road to boat ramp at mile 3. Travel 7 miles west on Alaganik Slough, then quarter-mile north on Tiedeman Slough to cabin on east bank. Jet boats recommended due to swift currents and shallow depths. Check tide schedules before departure.
