About
Split Mountain Group Campground is located along the Green River at 4,800 feet elevation in Dinosaur National Monument, nestled beneath the eroded ramparts of Split Mountain. The campground sits on a bench dotted with Fremont cottonwoods and sagebrush, offering limited shade and sweeping views of the surrounding geology. With 4 group sites, each accommodating up to 25 people and 6 vehicles, this campground caters to larger parties seeking a base for exploring the monument. The campground is strategically positioned 5 miles from the Quarry Exhibit Hall, where visitors can view over 1,500 dinosaur fossils still encased in the rock face. Adjacent to the campground is the Split Mountain Boat Ramp, the primary take-out point for rafters completing trips through the monument's canyons on the Green and Yampa Rivers. The location provides easy access to hiking trails, scenic drives, and cultural sites featuring Fremont petroglyphs and historic homesteads. During the off-season when the nearby Green River Campground closes, Split Mountain opens to both individual campers and groups on a first-come, first-served basis at reduced rates. The campground's mostly flat terrain makes it accessible, though wheelchair users may require assistance navigating between sites. Stage 2 fire restrictions are currently in effect, prohibiting wood and charcoal fires even in provided fire grates.
Directions
From Jensen, Utah, take Utah State Route 149 north approximately 12 miles. The campground is located about 4 miles east of the Quarry Visitor Center along Cub Creek Road.
