No Wood or Charcoal Fires Allowed - Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in Effect
All wood and charcoal fires, including in fire grates, grills, or fire pans at campgrounds, picnic areas, or river camps are prohibited. Pressurized gas and liquid fuel stoves with on/off switches are allowed. No smoking outdoors. Per 36 CFR § 1.5(f).
Road Construction on Green River and Quarry Access Roads
Road construction is currently occurring from the monument boundary to the Quarry Visitor Center and Exhibit Hall. Speed limit if 25 mph through construction area. Road is currently a gravel surface. Motorcycles should use caution.
Rough Sections of Echo Park and Yampa Bench Roads
Recent storm damage resulted in washouts, exposed culverts, and rocks/mud on the roadway. Multiple sections of deep, powdery sand along Echo Park Road remain impassable for many vehicles, including small SUVs. High clearance and 4WD are strongly advised.
About
Rainbow Park Campground is a remote, primitive camping area located on the Green River at the head of Split Mountain Canyon in the Utah portion of Dinosaur National Monument. The campground sits 28 miles from the Quarry Visitor Center and is accessed via a challenging dirt road that demands high-clearance vehicles and becomes completely impassable when wet. The four first-come, first-served sites provide a rugged camping experience with basic amenities including vault toilets, fire grates, and picnic tables. No water is available, so campers must bring all water needed for drinking, cooking, and washing. The campground is situated near the Rainbow Park boat ramp, a popular put-in point for whitewater rafting trips through Split Mountain Canyon on the Green River. Visitors are rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding geology, including the prominent Mitten Park Fault. The campground can accommodate small RVs and truck-top campers up to 15 feet, though the rough access road limits practical use to high-clearance vehicles and experienced backcountry travelers. While open year-round, winter access is particularly challenging as the unpaved road receives no winter maintenance.
Directions
From the Quarry Visitor Center, drive south on State Road 149 for 4 miles. Turn right onto Brush Creek Road and follow for 5 miles. Turn right at the fork following signs to Island Park for 4 miles. Turn right onto Island Park Road and follow for 12 miles to reach Rainbow Park Campground. High-clearance vehicle required; road is impassable when wet.
