Grizzly Ridge Yurt

Open — Currently open for reservations. The yurt is available for booking year-round except November, April, and May. From approximately December 1 to March 31, access requires non-motorized travel via cross-country skiing or snowshoeing; snowmobiles are not permitted on the trail. Guests must contact the District Office at (435) 789-1181 three business days prior to arrival to obtain the door lock combination.

Grizzly Ridge Yurt is located on the Ashley National Forest at 9,200 feet elevation, approximately 20 air miles north of Vernal in eastern Utah. The primitive yurt sits in a small clearing surrounded by pines and aspens, offering beautiful views toward Red Fleet Reservoir and the valley below. This 314-square-foot yurt provides year-round lodging for up to 8 guests, with two bunk beds equipped with full-size mattresses. Guests must bring their own linens, bedding, and pillows. The yurt features basic amenities including a heavy-duty propane camp stove for cooking, a wood-burning stove for heat, and a portable propane Coleman lantern for lighting. The Forest Service provides propane for the stove and firewood for heating. No electricity, running water, or plumbing is available, and guests must bring their own water supply. A vault toilet is located outside the yurt. Tent camping is allowed outside the yurt for additional guests. The area offers excellent year-round recreation opportunities. Numerous hiking, mountain biking, and off-road trails crisscross the surrounding forest, including access to 9,335-foot Grizzly Ridge. In winter months, endless cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails begin right from the yurt. Wildlife viewing and wildflower displays are abundant in summer. Nearby attractions include Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area (within 25 miles), known for world-class fishing and water recreation, and the Ashley-Karst National Geologic Recreation Area with its dramatic canyons and cave networks.

Directions

From Vernal, travel north on U.S. Highway 191 approximately 25.5 miles. Look for the jeep road at the gap in the snowdrift fence along the curve. Turn left onto Forest Road 181. Follow FR 181 for 0.8 miles, then continue on FR 181/Trail 152B. At 1 mile, take the right fork onto Forest Trail 152B. At 1.5 miles stay right, at 1.9 miles go left to merge with the ski trail. The yurt is at 2.7 miles on the left side of the road.
