About

South Waldo Shelter is a rustic backcountry shelter located on the edge of a meadow near Waldo Lake in the Willamette National Forest. Accessed via cross-country skiing from Gold Lake Sno-Park, the trail passes Betty Lake and several smaller lakes before reaching the shelter approximately 3.9 miles from Waldo Lake Road. This route is recommended for equipped and experienced skiers. The shelter provides basic amenities including a wood stove for heating, a sleeping bench, and a gravel floor. Maximum overnight capacity is four persons. No drinking water or restrooms are available; visitors must pack out all garbage and human waste. Firewood, if provided, is for use in the woodstove only. Candles are prohibited; bring your own lighting. Overnight stays are permitted from November 15 through April 30, with a maximum stay of 3 nights. The shelter cannot be reserved and exclusive use by individuals or groups is prohibited. A Sno-Park permit is required during winter months to park at the Gold Lake Sno-Park trailhead.

Directions

From Oakridge, travel east on Highway 58 for 23.3 miles. Turn left on Waldo Lake Road/Forest Road 5897 and travel 6.7 miles to Forest Road 5896. Turn left and travel 2 miles to the day use parking area. The shoreline trail heading south past the day use area leads to South Waldo Shelter. Winter access is via Gold Lake Sno-Park following Gold Lake Road and Trail to Waldo Lake Road, then the marked trail approximately 3.9 miles to the shelter.
