About

South Van Houten Campground is a rustic, no-fee campground located on the south shore of Van Houten Lake in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The campground sits at 6,700 feet elevation, surrounded by lodgepole pine forest, and offers a quieter alternative to the North Van Houten Campground across the lake. The campground has 3 established family sites, each with a picnic table. Facilities are minimal: an ADA-accessible vault toilet is provided, but there is no potable water and no trash service, so campers must pack out all garbage. The lake provides fishing access and non-motorized boating opportunities. Access is via Forest Road 181, a 10.5-mile drive from Highway 278 near Jackson. The road accommodates trailers up to 30 feet. There is no cell phone coverage in the area. Sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted.

Directions

From Jackson, travel 1.5 miles south on Highway 278 and take Forest Road 181. Continue for 10.5 miles to the campground.
