About

Twin Lakes Cabin sits at 7,200 feet at the base of Squaw and Jumbo peaks on the shore of 75-acre Twin Lakes in the Beaverhead Mountains. Built in the 1920s to house Forest Service trail crews and fire lookouts, the cabin retains its backcountry character while providing basic shelter. The single room contains one bunk bed with mattresses, two folding cots, a wood-burning stove for heat, a propane cook stove, and basic cooking utensils. The surrounding area offers excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in summer, with the Big Lake Creek Trail providing access to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Twin Lakes supports trout, arctic grayling, and mountain whitefish; electric motors only are permitted on the lake. Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, though avalanche awareness is essential. Access is challenging outside summer. Vehicle access typically runs July 1 through September 30; after snow closes the road, guests must travel up to 12 miles by snowmobile, ski, snowshoe, or ATV. There is no cell phone coverage. Guests must bring their own drinking water (except June-September when a hand pump operates), toilet paper, bedding, and propane canisters. Firewood is provided October through mid-June only. All trash must be packed out.

Directions

From Wisdom, MT, travel south on Highway 278 approximately 6-7 miles. Turn west onto Twin Lakes Road and follow for approximately 7-8 miles through private ranch land. Turn left onto Forest Road 945 and continue approximately 5 miles south. At the junction with Forest Road 183, turn right (west) for approximately 4-6 miles to the end of the road. The cabin is located in Twin Lakes Campground on the lake shore, between Site 2 and Site 5. Winter access requires snowmobile, ski, or snowshoe from the end of the plowed road, following orange diamond markers.
