About
Bloody Dick Cabin sits at approximately 7,100 feet elevation in a lodgepole pine forest beneath the Continental Divide in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The small one-room cabin was named after English trapper Richard "Bloody" Leigh and is located near Reservoir Lake and Bloody Dick Creek in southwestern Montana's Bitterroot Mountains. The cabin provides basic amenities including two bunkbeds with mattresses (sleeps 4), a wood-burning stove for heat, a propane cook stove with small oven, table and chairs, cooking and eating utensils, and solar lighting. Firewood is provided but not guaranteed; guests should replenish split wood before departure. A vault toilet outhouse is located outside. There is no electricity, no cell phone coverage, and drinking water is only available June through September via an indoor faucet. Access during snow-free months is by passenger vehicle, though roads are rough with gravel, dirt, and rock surfaces. During winter, snow conditions may require snowmobile or ski travel up to 23 miles from Jackson. Both black bears and grizzly bears are present in the area; proper food storage is required. Nearby recreation includes fishing in Bloody Dick Creek and Reservoir Lake, hiking on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, Nez Perce National Historic Trail, and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, plus winter activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
