About
Horse Prairie Cabin sits on a sunny hillside overlooking the grassy meadows of Horse Prairie in southwestern Montana. This fairly large, two-room log cabin was originally used by Forest Service work crews and has been converted to a recreation rental. The cabin sleeps up to four on bunk beds with mattresses and is equipped with a wood-burning stove for heat, propane stove and oven for cooking, basic cookware and dishes, and solar-powered lighting. The cabin is available year-round via Recreation.gov reservations. During summer months (June through September), drinking water is available from a hand pump. A vault toilet outhouse is located nearby. Guests must bring their own bedding, toilet paper, food, matches, flashlights, and garbage bags, as there is no trash service. Firewood is provided but not guaranteed. The surrounding area offers excellent recreation opportunities including hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Nearby creeks hold rainbow and brook trout as well as mountain whitefish. Wildlife in the area includes elk, moose, deer, bighorn sheep, and black bears. Winter visitors should be prepared for challenging access conditions, as snow may require over-snow travel for one to six miles.
