About
South Twin Lake Campground is located on the scenic shores of South Twin Lake, a volcanic crater lake in the Deschutes National Forest of central Oregon. The lake covers 99 acres with an average depth of 33 feet and a maximum depth of 58 feet, formed approximately 20,000 years ago when rising magma met groundwater and caused violent steam explosions. The resulting crater eventually filled with water, creating the lake visitors enjoy today. The campground provides 21 sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are available on-site. When operational, the water system runs from May through September 30, weather permitting. Maximum site spur length is 40 feet. Motorized boats are prohibited on the lake, making it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Fishing and swimming are popular activities. Nearby attractions include Newberry National Volcanic Monument, approximately 45 minutes away, where visitors can explore Lava River Cave, the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway climbs 66 miles through the Cascade Range past snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes.
