About

South Twin Lake Campground is located on the shores of South Twin Lake, a 99-acre lake formed approximately 20,000 years ago when rising magma encountered groundwater, resulting in violent steam explosions that created a broad shallow crater. The lake has an average depth of 33 feet with a maximum depth of 58 feet. The campground features 21 campsites that accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs with a maximum site spur length of 40 feet. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The lake offers excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Screened by heavy forest, South Twin Lake generally stays relatively windless and calm, making it ideal for paddling. The campground is located just a short distance from the Deschutes arm of Wickiup Reservoir and less than a mile south of North Twin Lake. Twin Lakes Resort is nearby and offers additional amenities including a store, restaurant, and boat rentals. The area provides access to the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, which climbs 66 miles through the Cascade Range past snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes. Newberry National Volcanic Monument, approximately 45 minutes away, offers interpretive programs and exhibits about the region's volcanic landscape, including Lava River Cave, the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon.
