About

South Steens Campground is located in the heart of Steens Mountain at over 6,000 feet elevation. The campground features 36 family campsites amid juniper and sage, each with picnic tables and grills. A separate equestrian area directly adjacent to the family campground offers 15 sites specifically designed for horse users, complete with tie posts and small corrals. Recreational stock including horses, mules, llamas, and goats are not permitted in the family portion but are welcome in the equestrian area. The campground serves as a gateway to exploring Steens Mountain's dramatic landscapes. Visitors can access the Historic Riddle Brothers Ranch, multiple hiking trails, and the spectacular Little Blitzen and Big Indian gorges. The campground sits along the Steens Mountain Loop Road, approximately 18 miles from Highway 205. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. The campground provides vault toilets and drinking water during the operating season. The BLM requires the use of pelletized or certified weed-free hay on all public lands in Oregon and Washington. The remote location and high elevation mean visitors should come prepared for variable mountain weather conditions.
