About

Joaquin Miller Horse Camp is an 8-site campground in Malheur National Forest, located 19 miles north of Burns, Oregon along US Highway 395. Despite its easily accessible roadside location, the campground receives light use most of the year. Specifically developed to accommodate stock animals, the facility features two pipe stock corrals and hitching rails for equestrian campers. The campground provides basic amenities including vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water, though water is only available during warmer months and is shut off from early to mid-October until mid to late May or early June depending on temperatures. There is no trash service, so visitors must pack out everything they bring in. The campground can accommodate camp trailers 20 feet in length or under, with sites featuring tables and fire pits. Nearby trails have been impacted by recent wildfires, and visitors should expect to encounter down logs, overgrown brush, and trail damage. The Forest Service has contracted maintenance work to address the backlog. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit, offering a peaceful equestrian basecamp in eastern Oregon's high desert forest.
