About
Joaquin Miller Horse Camp is a lightly used 8-site campground in Malheur National Forest, developed specifically for equestrian camping. The campground features two pipe stock corrals and hitching rails for horses. Despite its easily accessible location along US Highway 395, just 19 miles north of Burns, Oregon, the campground sees light use throughout the season. Set among ponderosa pine trees, this camp serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding national forest. Nearby trails include Idlewild Loop Trail #317, Devine Summit Trail #318, Craft Cabin Trail #319, and Myrtle Creek Trail #308. Note that some trails have not been maintained recently due to wildfire damage, with down logs, overgrown brush, and tread damage present. Amenities include vault toilets and a hand-pump well for drinking water (seasonal availability, typically mid-May through mid-October). There is no trash service; campers must pack out all waste. The campground can accommodate camp trailers up to 20 feet in length. All sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations required. Cashless fee payment is available via the Recreation.gov app.
Directions
From Burns, OR, travel 2.8 miles east on US Highway 20 to the junction with US Highway 395. Turn north onto US Highway 395 and continue approximately 16.4 miles. The campground will be on the left.
