About
Jackman Park Campground occupies one of the most scenic locations in Oregon's high desert, perched at 7,800 feet on Steens Mountain within the Cooperative Management and Protection Area. The campground sits among aspen stands that provide exceptional fall color viewing, typically peaking in late September and early October. Six primitive campsites offer picnic tables and fire grates. The setting showcases the extraordinary landscape of Steens Mountain with its deep glacier-carved gorges, stunning scenery, and rich biodiversity. The nearby Kiger Gorge Overlook presents dramatic views of a classic U-shaped glacial valley and is one of the best places to spot the area's famous wild horse herd. The nearest services are in Frenchglen, Fields, Crane, or Narrows. Access requires navigating the Steens Mountain Loop Road, where high-clearance vehicles are recommended for some portions. Mountain weather at this elevation can be unpredictable and change suddenly. Summer visitors should be prepared for ticks, mosquitoes, and rattlesnakes.
