About

Jackman Park Campground is located on the flanks of Steens Mountain within the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protective Area, an extraordinary landscape of deep glacier-carved gorges, stunning scenery, and rich biodiversity. At 7,800-foot elevation and nestled among aspen stands, the campground offers some of the best fall color viewing on Steens Mountain. The six first-come, first-served campsites each feature picnic tables and fire grates. The campground's location near the Kiger Gorge Overlook provides access to views of the gorge's distinctive U-shaped glacial valley and opportunities to spot the area's famous herd of wild Kiger mustangs. At this high elevation, mountain weather can be unpredictable and change suddenly, so campers should come prepared. The campground offers a universal access restroom, but campers must pack out all trash. High clearance vehicles are recommended for some portions of the Steens Mountain Loop Road. The remote location means the nearest services are in the communities of Fields, Frenchglen, Crane, or Narrows. Ticks, mosquitos, and rattlesnakes may be present during summer months. The campground is accessible via the Steens Mountain Loop Road, located approximately 2 miles east of Fish Lake Campground.

Directions

From Burns, travel southeast for approximately 2 miles on State Highway 78. Turn right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen. Continue a short distance past Frenchglen, then turn left onto the Steens Mountain Loop Road. Travel approximately 19 miles before turning right into Fish Lake Campground. Jackman Park Campground is 2 miles east of Fish Lake Campground.
