About
Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, Idlewild Campground is an easily accessible campground located just off US Highway 395 in the Malheur National Forest. Situated at 5,000 feet elevation in a large stand of Ponderosa pines near a meadow, the campground remains lightly used throughout most of the year, becoming busy primarily during the fall hunting season. The campground offers individual campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis, plus a beautiful wood-framed, open-air pavilion that accommodates up to 75 people and can be reserved through Recreation.gov. The Devine Summit Trail begins within the campground, providing opportunities for hiking and mountain biking during warmer months. Winter brings snowmobilers and cross-country skiers to the area, with an adjacent Sno-Park providing winter access. Idlewild serves as an ideal base camp for exploring the Malheur National Forest's 1.46 million acres, including the nearby Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. The campground's easy roadside access and quiet setting make it perfect for travelers seeking a peaceful overnight stop. Visitors should note there is no trash service, so pack-it-in, pack-it-out practices are required.
