Closed — Closed for the season. Fee campgrounds on the Malheur National Forest operate from May 1 through October 31. Limited to 14 consecutive nights per stay.

Alcohol Prohibitions

This Order describes acts that are prohibited upon lands, roads and trails within the National Forest System administered by the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region in regards to alcoholic beverages.

Aquatic Invasive Species

This Order prohibits 1) possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic invasive animal species AND 2) prohibits possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic or riparian invasive plant species - on National Forest System lands in the Pacific Northwest Region as specified in the Order.

Restrictions on Use of Forage and Mulch Products

This Order prohibits unloading, storing, or using any straw, hay, grain, seed, or other forage or mulch products that are not state-certified weed free on the National Forest System lands, roads or trails in any Closure Area as specific in the Order.

Malheur Falls Post Fire Hazards Closure

Prohibitions1.   Entering into or being upon an area closed for the protection of public health and safety. 36 CFR § 261.53(e).2.   Being on a National Forest System Road. 36 CFR § 261.54(c) and (e).

14 Day Stay Limit

Prohibition of Camping on the Umatilla, Wallowa-Whitman, and Malheur National Forests for a period longer than 14 days within any 30-day period. 36 CFR § 261.58(a)

Rock Springs Campground is a small, secluded campground conveniently located just off Forest Road 17 in the Malheur National Forest. Nestled among ponderosa pine trees between Burns and John Day, Oregon, this quiet campground offers a peaceful setting for campers seeking solitude and a respite from highway travel. The campground has light use throughout most of the season, with increased activity during big game hunting seasons. Visitors can enjoy fishing at nearby Poison Creek Reservoir, hiking local trails such as Malheur River Trail #303 and Craft Cabin Trail #319, and exploring the surrounding ponderosa pine forest. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a small nightly fee. Basic amenities include vault toilets and each site has a table and fire pit, though campers must bring their own water. The setting provides excellent opportunities for hunters, anglers, and travelers looking for an affordable, quiet place to camp in eastern Oregon's high country.

Directions

From Burns, OR, travel east on US Highway 20 approximately 2.8 miles to US Highway 395 north. Turn right onto US Highway 395 north toward John Day, OR. Follow US Highway 395 for approximately 30.8 miles to the junction with Forest Road 17. Turn right onto Forest Road 17, travel 4.8 miles to the junction with Forest Road 054. Follow Forest Road 054 for approximately 1 mile, the campground will be on the right.
