About
South Hill Campground is part of Lake Metigoshe State Park, nestled in North Dakota's scenic Turtle Mountains near the Canadian border. Constructed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, this park has become one of North Dakota's most popular year-round vacation destinations. The campground sits within a forested setting that provides natural privacy between campsites. The park features unique woodlands and wetlands that provide habitat for a wide variety of plant, animal, and bird species seldom seen elsewhere in North Dakota, including moose, white-tailed deer, pine martens, and ruffed grouse. Visitors can explore over 13 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, including the Old Oak Trail, North Dakota's first National Recreation Trail. The small lakes within the park provide excellent opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, fishing for northern pike, walleye, and perch, and other water sports during the warmer months. Winter transforms the park into a destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, sledding, and ice fishing. The Peace Garden Snowmobile Trail runs through the park, connecting to over 250 miles of groomed trails throughout the Turtle Mountains. The park hosts year-round educational programs and events focused on history, nature, and outdoor recreation at the Lake Metigoshe Outdoor Learning Center.
