Lake Metigoshe State Park

Overview

Lake Metigoshe State Park is open year-round and is one of North Dakota's most popular vacation destinations. Located in the scenic Turtle Mountains along the U.S./Canadian border, 14 miles northeast of Bottineau, the park sits on the shores of Lake Metigoshe and encompasses approximately 1,500 acres. Built by the WPA in the 1930s, the park offers over 13 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, including North Dakota's first National Recreation Trail (a 3-mile self-guided interpretive trail). The park features unique woodlands and wetlands that support wildlife rarely seen elsewhere in North Dakota, including moose, white-tailed deer, pine marten, and ruffed grouse. Facilities include modern campgrounds with electric/water hookups, primitive camping, multiple cabins and yurts for rent, a swim beach, boat ramp, four fishing docks, and an outdoor learning center. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, fat tire biking, sledding, and access to the Peace Garden Snowmobile Trail. The park offers extensive educational programs and equipment rentals (kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, pontoon boats, and winter gear). Reservations for campsites can be made up to 95 days in advance.
