About

Smith Rapids Campground is located on the South Fork of the Flambeau River, about 12 miles east of Fifield off Highway 70. The campground features 11 sites: 3 tent-only sites and 8 standard sites, with 7 specifically designed to accommodate horse trailers with extra-long parking spurs up to 45+ feet. Hitching rails are available for equestrians, and the campground provides direct access to the 18.5-mile Smith River Saddle Equestrian Trail. Amenities include two vault toilets, potable water, garbage and recycling dumpsters, and a carry-down boat ramp. The fast-flowing river is popular among canoeists and anglers targeting walleye, smallmouth bass, redhorse, musky, and northern pike. The campground sits at approximately 1,500 feet elevation with shady, wooded sites. Near the recreation area entrance stands the Smith Rapids Covered Bridge, constructed in 1991. It is the only glue-laminated town lattice covered bridge in Wisconsin and a popular photo spot. The nearby 70-mile Flambeau Trail System offers additional opportunities for hiking and mountain biking.
