About
Shutes Branch Recreation Area sits on the shores of Old Hickory Lake, a 22,500-acre reservoir on the Cumberland River just a short drive from Nashville. The lake is named after President Andrew Jackson, nicknamed "Old Hickory" for his tough personality, and features 440 miles of scenic wooded shoreline. The recreation area is a hub for outdoor activities, with facilities including a boat launch, fishing platform, picnic sites, and swimming access. The Shutes Branch Mountain Biking Trail is accessible from the picnic area and caters to all skill levels. The first section provides gentle terrain ideal for beginners, while the second portion challenges experienced cyclists with rocky terrain, ledges, and tight turns. Fishing and boating are popular activities given the site's prime lakefront location. Shutes Branch offers one reservable group picnic shelter with 20-amp electric hookups that can accommodate up to 50 guests. Nearby attractions include fishing piers at Rockland, Sanders Ferry, and Bledsoe Creek State Park, as well as The Hermitage, President Andrew Jackson's historic plantation home.
