With hunting season underway, the National Forests in Mississippi is reminding all forest visitors to exercise caution and safety when visiting a national forest. Hunting is a safe, recreational sport. Some visitors, however, are sometimes surprised when they meet hunters on the forest.

Shockaloe Trail Base Camp 1 serves as the primary camping facility for the Shockaloe Horse Trail system in Bienville National Forest. Located just a quarter mile north of U.S. Highway 80 on Forest Service Road 513, this primitive campground provides essential amenities for equestrians and hikers exploring the 22-mile trail that winds through the northern half of the forest. The Shockaloe Trail is listed in the National Register of Trails and takes riders and hikers through varying terrains and vegetation types, showcasing more than 60 years of forest management practices. The trail is relatively flat with well-defined paths, though stream crossings and wet areas may be encountered depending on recent rainfall. Base Camp 1 operates on a first-come, first-served basis with camping fees of $7 per night. Payment can be made on-site using the Recreation.gov mobile app's Scan and Pay feature, or with cash or check. The campground features vault toilets and drinking water from a hand pump. Campers are limited to a 14-day stay. During deer hunting season, wearing orange or bright-colored clothing is recommended.

Directions

The campground is located in Bienville National Forest between Forest and Morton, just north of U.S. Highway 80. From Highway 80, turn north onto Forest Service Road 513 and travel 0.25 miles to Base Camp 1.
