About
Shiefer Campground sits at 3,050 feet elevation on the banks of the Salmon River, surrounded by dramatic South Fork canyon scenery. This undeveloped, no-fee site in the Payette National Forest provides a rustic launching point for exploring the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness via riverside trails, or for a shorter hike to the Pilot Peak lookout. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets and picnic tables, but campers must bring their own water or filter from nearby sources. All trash must be packed out. Dogs are welcome on leash, though horses and pack animals are not permitted at this site. Access requires a commitment: from McCall, follow Warren Wagon Road (Forest Road 21) north, then turn east onto Forest Road 340, passing through the historic mining communities of Secesh and Warren. The drive takes 2-3 hours, and the campground is not serviced on a regular basis, making it ideal for self-sufficient campers seeking solitude.
Directions
From McCall, travel north on Warren Wagon Road (Forest Road 21), then east on Forest Road 340, passing through the historic mining towns of Secesh and Warren. Allow 2-3 hours for the drive.
