About
Mackay Bar Campground sits on the north bank of the Salmon River within the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, offering one of Idaho's most remote camping experiences. This primitive campground features just three sites with tables and fire grates, making it ideal for adventurous campers seeking solitude in a spectacular wilderness setting. Access is via Red River-Dixie Road #222, a very rough, winding road with many tight switchbacks that extends approximately 44 miles south from the former Red River Ranger Station. Low-range, 4-wheel drive is strongly recommended, and trailers cannot navigate the road. The challenging access means this campground sees relatively light use despite its stunning riverside location. During much of the year, the area is also accessible by jet boat, raft, or airplane via the nearby Mackay Bar Ranch airstrip. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water. Campers must filter or treat water from the Salmon River. Parking is limited at each site. The area is home to rattlesnakes and poison ivy, and campers should be mindful of adjacent private property. Pack out all trash, as no garbage service is available. Fishing opportunities abound in the Wild and Scenic Salmon River.
Directions
From State Highway 14, turn south on Red River-Dixie Road #222 and continue past the Red River Ranger Station (now closed), through Dixie Town, past the Dixie Guard Station and to the Salmon River (approximately 44 miles south of the Red River Ranger Station). Turn left and continue approximately 0.5 mile to the campground. Low-range 4WD required, no trailers.
