About

Mackay Bar Campground sits at 2,300 feet elevation on the north bank of the mighty Salmon River, deep within the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. This remote, no-fee campground provides three primitive campsites with picnic tables and fire grates. A vault toilet is available. River and stream fishing opportunities are nearby. Reaching this campground requires commitment. From State Highway 14, turn south on Red River-Dixie Road #222 and continue approximately 44 miles past the former Red River Ranger Station, through Dixie, past Dixie Guard Station to the Salmon River. Turn left and continue 0.5 mile to the campground. The access road is very rough with tight switchbacks; low-range 4WD is recommended. No trailers are permitted. Parking is limited. Campers should be aware of rattlesnakes and poison ivy in the area. Be considerate of adjacent private property. No potable water is available; bring your own or treat water from nearby sources.
