About

Shelter Bay Cabin is a remote Forest Service rental cabin situated on the southwest shore of Shelter Bay on Hinchinbrook Island in the Chugach National Forest. The island lies in the Gulf of Alaska at the entrance to Prince William Sound, surrounded by low forested hills of spruce, hemlock, and muskeg openings. The cabin offers outstanding opportunities for fishing, hunting, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing in a true wilderness setting. The 20x20-foot rustic cabin accommodates up to six people on wooden bunkbeds. Amenities include a table with benches, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, and rainwater catchment barrel. An outhouse provides toilet facilities. There is no running water, electricity, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood provided. Visitors must bring sleeping bags and pads, fuel (#1 oil, kerosene, or firewood), drinking water, food, and cooking equipment. The outlet channel of Shelter Bay is a popular coho salmon fishing site in August and September, with pink and chum salmon appearing in early July. The inlet creek offers fishing for Dolly Varden and sea-run cutthroat trout. Hunters can pursue brown bear in spring and fall, and Sitka black-tail deer from late summer through late fall. Wildlife includes waterfowl, and humpback and orca whales are occasionally spotted offshore.

Directions

The cabin is on the southwest shore of Shelter Bay on Hinchinbrook Island. Access by floatplane at high tide (20 minutes from Cordova) or wheeled plane at low tide using the landing strip 350 yards north of the cabin. Access by boat is 50 miles from Cordova.
