About
Jack Bay Cabin sits at the edge of a grassy clearing overlooking Jack Bay, southeast of the Valdez Narrows in the Chugach National Forest. The 12x14-foot rustic cabin accommodates up to 6 people and is backed by a thick temperate rainforest of spruce and hemlock. Mountains rise steeply from the shoreline, with waterfalls surging from ice fields and glaciers visible from the cabin's front deck. The cabin provides basic amenities including a table, oil stove for heating, rainwater catchment barrel, and a pit toilet. Guests must be self-sufficient, bringing their own drinking water, approximately one gallon of kerosene oil per day, bedding, cooking utensils, and food. All trash must be packed out. No electricity, running water, or cut firewood is provided. Recreation opportunities abound. Pink salmon fishing is available steps from the front door, while coho fishing picks up later in the season in nearby creeks. Low tide reveals razor clams, eel, and crabs for beachcombing. Harbor seals and sea otters frequent the bay. Sitka black-tailed deer, mountain goats, and brown bears inhabit the surrounding area. Hunting and fishing require permits from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
