About

Hook Point Cabin is located 1.5 miles west of Hook Point on Hinchinbrook Island in the Chugach National Forest. The 16x16-foot rustic A-frame cabin features a sleeping loft and can accommodate up to 6 people. The cabin sits in a mature spruce forest at the edge of a long, sandy intertidal beach on the Gulf of Alaska side of the island, with steep mountains rising behind it. The cabin includes basic amenities: a table, oil stove, wood stove, rainwater catchment barrel, and an outhouse. Guests must bring their own kerosene oil for the stove (about 1 gallon per day), as well as mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, and firewood. Surface water should be boiled for 5 minutes before drinking. Access is exclusively by wheeled plane landing on the beach at low tide only, with a 15-minute flight from Cordova. The landing area is a half-mile from the cabin. Recreation opportunities include fishing for pink salmon, coho salmon, and cutthroat trout in a creek about a mile east of the cabin, with small runs available in August during high tide. Razor clamming is possible during minus tides along the extensive sandy beach. The area is excellent for beachcombing, especially in spring when winter storms wash up Japanese fishing floats, shells, and other treasures. Several primitive trails extend into the forest, with a nearby waterfall making a good day hike destination. Wildlife viewing opportunities include Sitka black-tailed deer, brown bear, and occasional views of humpback and killer whales offshore. Hunting seasons include spring and fall for bear, and late summer through late fall for deer.

Directions

Access by wheeled plane only, landing on the beach at low tide. 15-minute flight from Cordova (25 air miles southwest). Landing area is half a mile from the cabin. Consult tide tables before travel.
