About
Hook Point Cabin is a remote Forest Service cabin situated in a mature spruce stand at the edge of a long, sandy intertidal beach on the Gulf of Alaska side of Hinchinbrook Island. The 16x16-foot A-frame structure with loft accommodates up to 6 guests and provides wooden bunks, table and benches, and both wood and oil stoves for heating. An outdoor pit toilet and rainwater catchment barrel are available, but there is no running water, electricity, or cut firewood. Access is exclusively by wheeled plane landing on the beach at low tide, approximately 15 minutes from Cordova. The landing area is a half-mile from the cabin, requiring a walk that includes crossing a wetland with knee-deep water created by a beaver dam; rubber boots are essential. Visitors must be self-sufficient and bring potable water, firewood, #1 heating oil, food, sleeping bags, cooking gear, and all other necessities. The area offers excellent recreation including fishing for pink salmon, coho salmon, and cutthroat trout in a creek about a mile east of the cabin. Razor clamming is available during minus tides, and miles of sandy beach provide prime beachcombing, especially in spring when winter storms deposit Japanese fishing floats and other ocean treasures. Primitive trails extend into the forest, with a nearby waterfall making a good day hike. Wildlife includes Sitka black-tailed deer, brown bears, and occasional humpback and killer whales offshore.
Directions
Access by wheeled plane on the beach at low tide only, approximately 15 minutes from Cordova. The landing area is a half-mile from the cabin.
