About
Beach River Cabin provides a truly remote wilderness experience on Montague Island at the entrance to Prince William Sound. This 12x14-foot pre-cut cedar log cabin sits in a mature spruce tree stand approximately a half-mile from the beach landing area, about 200 yards south of Beach River on the Gulf of Alaska. The cabin accommodates up to six guests on wooden bunks and includes a table, benches, and both wood and oil stoves for heating. Access is exclusively by wheeled plane landing on the beach at low tide, with flights available from Anchorage, Cordova (40 minutes), or Seward (45 minutes). Visitors must coordinate travel with tide schedules carefully. The surrounding intertidal beach is open for public use below mid-level high tide, while adjacent uplands are owned by Chugach Alaska Corporation and require separate permission to access. Montague Island is renowned among anglers as "The Land of the Giants," producing fish over 100 pounds including a 350-pound halibut caught in 2007. Coho salmon arrive at Beach River in mid-August and pink salmon in mid-July. Hunters can pursue brown bear in spring and fall, with deer season running late summer through late fall. The pebble-strewn shoreline is excellent for beachcombing, including Japanese glass fishing floats.
Directions
Accessible only by wheeled plane on the beach at low tide. Flight time is 40 minutes southwest of Cordova or 45 minutes east of Seward. Check tide charts before arranging air transportation.
