About
Beach River Cabin offers a truly remote lodging experience on Montague Island at the Gulf of Alaska entrance to Prince William Sound. This 12x14-foot pre-cut cedar log cabin sleeps up to six guests on wooden bunks and includes a table, benches, wood and oil stoves for heat, a rainwater catchment barrel, and an outdoor pit toilet. The cabin sits in a mature spruce tree stand approximately half a mile from the intertidal beach landing area. Access requires wheeled plane transportation at low tide from Anchorage, Cordova, or Seward, with flight times of 40-45 minutes. The surrounding area features thick spruce and hemlock forest with a pebble-strewn shoreline offering expansive ocean and mountain views. Montague Island is renowned as "The Land of the Giants" among anglers, with coho salmon arriving at Beach River in mid-August and pink salmon in mid-July. The area has produced fish over 100 pounds, including a 350-pound halibut. Visitors must bring all supplies including water, #1 stove oil for heating, sleeping bags, cook stoves, and food. Firewood availability cannot be guaranteed. The 40-acre Forest Service parcel is surrounded by Chugach Alaska Corporation land requiring permission for access. Wildlife includes migratory waterfowl, Sitka black-tail deer, and brown bears. Maximum stay is seven consecutive days.
Directions
Accessible only by wheeled plane on the beach at low tide from Anchorage (45 minutes), Cordova (40 minutes southwest), or Seward (45 minutes east). Check NOAA tide charts before departure. The cabin is located half a mile inland from the beach landing area.
