Port Chalmers Cabin sits in a grassy clearing at the edge of a dense spruce-hemlock forest on Montague Island, at the southern end of Port Chalmers on the northwest side of the island. The remote location offers exceptional opportunities for fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing in the Gulf of Alaska. Anglers can pursue pink, chum, and coho salmon in surrounding bays and streams, while rockfish and halibut inhabit the kelp beds and rocky bottom areas in the open ocean outside the bay. The rustic 12x14-foot cabin accommodates up to 6 guests on wooden bunks without mattresses. Amenities include a table, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, and a rainwater catchment barrel. An outdoor pit toilet is provided. There is no running water, electricity, cut firewood, stove oil, or cooking utensils. Guests must bring their own water, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stoves, matches, firewood, cooking gear, light source, No. 1 stove oil (approximately 1 gallon per day), toilet paper, first aid kit, and garbage bags for pack-out. The cabin is currently closed until further notice due to backlogged deferred maintenance and has been removed from the reservation system. Wildlife in the area includes migratory waterfowl, Sitka black-tailed deer, and brown bears. Some surrounding land on Montague Island is privately owned by Chugach Alaska Corporation and requires permission for access.

Directions

Access is by floatplane (40 minutes from Cordova, 60 minutes from Seward) or boat (65 miles from Cordova, 70 miles from Whittier, 100 miles from Seward). Best access to the cabin is at high tide. Winter access may be difficult due to pan ice in the bay.
