About
Port Chalmers Cabin offers a remote wilderness lodging experience on Montague Island in southcentral Alaska's Prince William Sound. This 12x14-foot rustic cabin accommodates up to 6 guests and sits in a grassy clearing at the edge of a dense spruce-hemlock forest on the southern end of Port Chalmers bay. The cabin includes basic amenities: a table, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, rainwater catchment barrel, and an outhouse. Visitors must bring their own bedding, cooking utensils, kerosene for the oil stove (typically one gallon per day), and be prepared for extended stays due to unpredictable weather. The surrounding area provides excellent opportunities for fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. Anglers can fish for pink, chum, and coho salmon in nearby streams and the bay, with the Chalmers River about a mile north serving as the main spawning stream. Rockfish and halibut inhabit kelp beds and rocky areas in the open ocean beyond the bay. Hunters can pursue Sitka black-tailed deer and brown bears during generous seasons. The island supports abundant wildlife including migratory waterfowl, and the landscape features low hills rising to distant snow-capped peaks. Access requires floatplane (40 minutes from Cordova, 60 minutes from Seward) or boat (65 miles from Cordova, 70 miles from Whittier, 100 miles from Seward). High tide access is recommended, and winter visitors should be prepared for pan ice in the bay. Some lands on Montague Island are owned by Chugach Alaska Corporation and require permission for access.
