About
Fred's Creek Cabin sits on Sitka Sound on a rocky Kruzof Island shoreline surrounded by spruce and hemlock forest. The oceanfront location places visitors just east of Mount Edgecumbe, a 3,200-foot dormant volcano that dominates the landscape. Fred's Creek flows to saltwater just north of the cabin. The 6.7-mile Mount Edgecumbe Trail begins nearby, offering a gradual hike through muskeg and forest before becoming steep at the cone, where panoramic views reward hikers on clear days. The cabin accommodates 8 people with plywood bunks downstairs and a full sleeping loft accessed by staircase. A wood stove provides heat, and the cabin includes an axe or splitting maul, table, benches, cooking counter, and front deck. An outhouse is provided. Water is available from Fred's Creek but must be treated before use. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, pads, cooking equipment, food, lantern, garbage bags, fire starter, and raingear with rubber boots. A mooring buoy near the cabin is available on a first-come, first-served basis; cabin reservations do not guarantee buoy access. Erratic waves and lack of protected anchorage can make boat landings dangerous or impossible. Visitors are encouraged to consult tide tables and consider using local charter operators. Humpback whales are often seen offshore in early spring and late fall. Brown bears frequent the area.
Directions
Located on the southeastern shore of Kruzof Island, 10 miles west of Sitka. Access is by boat (30-minute ride from Sitka) or helicopter landing on the beach at lower tides. Local wave action may make landing dangerous; consult tide tables and consider using local charter boat operators. Refer to USGS topographic maps Sitka A-5, A-6.
