About

Sheep Creek Campground occupies a stunning position in Cedar Grove, nestled within one of the deepest canyons in the United States. The campground sits at 4,600 feet elevation where Sheep Creek meets the South Fork of the Kings River, surrounded by tall granite mountainsides and forests of ponderosa pine and incense cedar. The 111 sites are spread throughout the campground with paved roads providing access for both RVs and smaller vehicles. Each campsite includes a fire ring, picnic table, and large bear-proof food storage box, essential in this active bear habitat. Five comfort stations throughout the campground provide flush toilets, dishwashing sinks, and potable water. The campground is located just 0.25 miles from the Cedar Grove Visitor Center, with Cedar Grove Village nearby offering a convenience store, gift shop, snack bar, hotel, showers, and laundry facilities. The location provides excellent access to hiking trails ranging from easy riverside walks to challenging backcountry routes. Popular day hikes include Mist Falls, Cedar Grove Overlook, the peaceful Kanawyer Loop along the Kings River, and Zumwalt Meadow. The Kings River offers trout fishing opportunities, and the Cedar Grove Pack Station provides guided horseback rides through the canyon. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area, and the dramatic granite landscape creates unforgettable scenery.

Directions

From Fresno, follow Highway 180 East approximately 31 miles past the Kings Canyon National Park entrance to Cedar Grove. Sheep Creek Campground is on the left (north) side of the road, 0.25 miles before the Cedar Grove Visitor Center. Vehicles over 22 feet should use the Kings Canyon National Park entrance rather than entering through Sequoia National Park, where the route between Potwisha Campground and Giant Forest Museum is not advised for larger vehicles.
