About

Big Meadows Guard Station is a charming 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps cabin situated at 7,600 feet elevation in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument, approximately 75 miles east of Fresno. The 900-square-foot cabin retains its original character including vintage cabinets and bath fixtures, while offering modern conveniences like a fully-equipped kitchen with stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. The bedroom contains a queen bed and twin bunk beds, while the living room features a double sofa sleeper, providing indoor sleeping for up to 6 guests. The cabin sits across the road from Big Meadows, a scenic meadow surrounded by Lodgepole and Jeffrey pines and Red fir, with a creek running through it. The Big Meadows Trailhead provides direct access to the Jennie Lakes Wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. Fly fishing in Big Meadows Creek is popular, and Buck Rock Lookout is a short drive away. Several Giant Sequoia groves are accessible by vehicle, and Hume Lake offers fishing and non-motorized boating about 15 miles away. Guests must bring their own bedding, linens, and sleeping bags. Proper food storage is required in this bear country. A forest/park permit ($35 for 7 days or $70 annual) is required to access the area through Kings Canyon National Park.

Directions

Take Highway 180 east to the Kings Canyon National Park entrance, where a forest/park permit is required. Continue 2 miles past the entrance to the park Wye. Turn right toward Sequoia National Park and continue on the Generals Highway approximately 6 miles to the Big Meadows Road turnoff (Forest Road 14S11) on the left. Follow this road approximately 4 miles; the cabin is on the left side of the road.
