About
Horse Camp Campground is a specialized equestrian camping facility located at 7,600 feet elevation in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, approximately 13 miles southeast of Grant Grove. Accessed via Generals Highway to Big Meadow Road (Forest Road 14S11), this small campground caters specifically to horse campers and backcountry riders exploring the area. The campground offers five campsites, each equipped with horse corrals, picnic tables, and fire rings. A vault toilet serves the campground, but no potable water is available, so campers must bring adequate water for both themselves and their stock. The facility is operated cooperatively by Sequoia National Forest and the Back Country Horsemen of California - San Joaquin Sierra Unit, reflecting its specialized focus on equestrian recreation. The location provides access to vast meadows, high granite mountains, and nearby Giant Sequoia groves. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees required, though donations for maintenance are accepted on-site. Campfire permits are required and can be obtained at local ranger stations or online. Given the high elevation and mountain location, the campground is typically inaccessible during winter months due to snow and road closures on Big Meadow Road.
